After 3 weeks I can say Synology’s RT1900AC is a small yet capable piece of hardware that has handled over 40 wifi g/n/ac and wired devices (including tivo, wemo, smart tvs, iOS, macOS, windows, thermostat, pool equipment, IP cameras and NVR). If I have 1 complaint, it’s coverage range of the 5Ghz, but it’s not terrible.
I tried 3 other routers over a 2 month period in this order: Linksys EA9500, Asus RT-AC5300, TP Link Archer C7. Synology RT1900AC outperformed each of them in the primary functions.
Surprised to see Linksys and Asus have connectivity issues with HP laptops via wifi, and see Asus 5GHz simply drop off. TP Link works, but doesn’t have a decent network map (Linksys was coolest), and TpLinks’s 5GHz range was less than Synology.
Synology SRM UI is different and fun to play with. It’s linux desktop GUI is completely different from the old “dlink/tplink/wrt54g” static interface. I haven’t spent too much time on the different downloadable packages, other than setting up a small 2.5” disk as a NAS utilizing the DLNA. It seems to work well on data transfer, but slow to mount via SMB over wifi. It would be nice if the router supported Plex (similar to the X10 nighthawk, but I don’t think it has the power).
I did hit a snag during while initially upgrading SRM firmware, the unit appeared to hang… but how cool to generate an automated support request. While I did get it working 20 min later, my support request wasn’t answered by Synology for 5 days. (still better than my 2 support tickets and 15 days with no call back from linksys).
I am hopeful Synology continues to update SRM with new features, better network mapping icons. The unit should have a learning feature to recommend settings for “traffic control” based on logged traffic. I haven’t seen any range increase with “beam forming”, but I do like the feature to “ban” internet access from wifi linked devices. This can be helpful for IOT device security, e.g. security cameras.
Bummed I didn’t get the more powerful RT2600 unit, but I was so disillusioned with $$$ routers. I’m hopeful this unit stays relevant until some of the newer marketed wifi technologies really take hold.
This router replaces a ASUS RT-AC66R router and in my opinion this one is must better for my usage. The interface is immediately familiar since I have a Synology Nas which is a big plus. Also minor but still a nice feature the ability to turn off all those blinking lights, nice since my router sits on the corner of my home office desk in my den, just have 1 green non blinking power on lamp, thats all I need.
Guest Network appears to work as expected. I don't use the Parental Controls or the VPN server so I cannot comment on that.
So overall if your uses are similar to mine where you need/want a fast router with a clean user friendly interface, this may be for you.
The reviews were fairly good but you have to keep in mind that all the Tech reviews are done when the product first comes out. The early firmware probably has some bugs and quirks. The RT1900ac has been out a while. The firmware has been updated many times and the interface has evolved. Two things made me buy it over another product: dual band and constant firmware updates (i.e. security updates). It was very easy to setup. The web interface is very nice and easy to figure out. I had it going quickly. Then once you update the firmware to the latest, the interface really sparkles. There is an iOS app too which is pretty neat. You can combine the 2.4G and 5G radios into one SSID. It will roam those frequencies automatically. The setup encourages security and will check your settings for you and offer changes.
You can also plug storage into it but I haven't done that. Remember Synology is a NAS company so there many storage options available. For me and my family, we just use the LAN ports connected to a couple Netgear 5 port GS105 switches to our main computer desktop, Roku, LG TV. The WiFi connects to a ChromeCast, iPhone SE, iPhone 5S, and 2 Brother printers. The iPhones can connect at 5G and will switch to 2.4G when at the far ends of the house. When the kids come home from college soon, we'll have more devices connected (WiFi and Wired).
After 6 days of use, I've been very happy. There is an RT2600ac available but I didn't want to spend that much. Hope this review helps.
Pros:
• Great software
• Easy to use
• Fast QoS (maxes out my 350/25mbps connection easily)
• Constant security updates
Cons:
• QoS features are limited compared to the gargoyle software
• If you need to use wireless, the range and speed of this router isn’t the greatest
Overall it’s worked great for me. I just wish it had more powerful tools.
