Set up: As soon as the router booted up I updated the firmware which completed without a problem. From there, I activated the media server, FTP, SMB, and similar "USB services." I used the same DDNS that I created with my Asus RT-N56U. Afterwards, I previously took screen shots of various settings from my previous router and copied the settings over (static IP routes for certain items and port forwarding, mostly). The GUI is very similar to previous Asus routers so the learning curve is easy. I had the router completely set up in under 40 minutes. I kept the same SSID as before so all my devices automatically connected to the new router as well.
Operation: The smart connect has worked flawlessly so far (must update firmware!), so I cannot tell you how each band performs independantly. No devices have dropped the connection, and the speed increase is phenomenal (especially coming from a first generation 5GHz router). The range was excellent too. I previously had a wired AP downstairs with the router upstairs on the opposite end of the house. With this router I get a usable signal everywhere in the house, so I got rid of the AP to avoid interference. I took dBm readings at various spots throughout the house to determine signal gain between routers but the results are modest. There is a few dBM decrease (improvement) for the spots near the router but at distance like in the driveway the difference is significant. Previously I was capped at 300 Mbps but would usually not get above 150 Mbps unless I was in the office with the router. Downstairs, I would normally only get 54 Mbps but as I'm writing this on my tablet I am pulling 526 Mbps and my phone is getting 433 Mbps. In summary, it is a major improvement, has features expected of a flagship router, and has the speed to satisfy nearly any user.
Pros:
-Fast and reliable
-Features (FTP, SMB, DDNS, adaptive QoS, DLNA, etc)
-Easy to follow GUI
-Removable antenna (can upgrade if necessary)
Cons:
-2x USB ports but only one is USB 3.0 and it is on the front. It is an awkward location and I cannot figure out the engineering logic behind it.
-Documentation is lacking on Smart Connect options (only router that lets you currently make adjustments). Apparently Asus and I believe Broadcom are working on documentation to explain what each item does, but in the interim the default works just fine.
-Yeah, thats about it. I'm not including the price as a con because at this price point you are looking for the best home router you can get.
Update1: I had one issue with roku while trying to stream Netflix. Netflix would cause the roku to hard boot and I noticed simultaneously that my phone dropped connection but reconnected quickly. I was worried because I had read about a similar issue others had encountered. However, I reset the roku to factory settings and reloaded Netflix and have not had a single issue after much testing. Keep in mind that router issues can be caused by a client so changing every setting you can think of in the router may not be the best, first course of action. Spending hours changing the wrong settings is why I suspect some other reviewers have had so much trouble. The router is still warm to hot but seems to be working well. Only time will tell if it can function at these temperatures for years which is my hope. I have had other routers this hot and they lasted well beyond their useful tech life. I like the antenae on this thing much better than the ones on the Netgear model. I do have the Netgear R8000 aka nighthawk x6 as well if I forgot to mention. So far I prefer the Asus.
I would like to quickly talk about asus technical support or any tech support for that matter. I can't speak to their competence because I never use them. I hear they are better than they were years ago in general. However, if I hit a dead end I much prefer to use search engines to find the same information tech support has or call an associate for moral support before I throw the hardware against concrete. A guy on the other end of the phone reading a "fix" that may not apply can be frustrating for anyone. If you are not a technical person then I suggest using the wizard to set things up. They worked pretty well in my testing but they are never perfect. I have not tested WPS either but I hear it works fine most of the time. I still need to test "smart connect" band steering and Qos or whatever they call it in this one. It would be more of a priority if I had more clients or less of a rocking ISP. I'll get to it though. Sorry for the ramblings.
Update2: I have been using the "smart connect" feature for a couple of days and have not had problems with it. I'm sure others have encountered issues from premature firmware and still others because they don't know how it works. The default rule set for this firmware version is basically a series of logical tests. The best way for me to explain it is probably to walk through the default and you can modify if needed.
Load balance is disabled by default so it is not a factor. Starting from the 2.4Ghz band…Here we go:
(Steering Trigger Condition) If 2.4Ghz bandwidth utilization is greater than 0%, and signal strength is greater than -52dBm, and PHY rate is greater than 110Mbps, then trigger those clients that meet the VHT condition. VHT is set to “ALL” clients by default.
(STA Selection Policy) This section is the same as above without factoring bandwidth utilization or load balance. It seems redundant but it provides another layer where you filter VHT (very high throughput) clients as needed or exclude any triggered clients by changing any parameter you like. The default settings for the for clients triggered from the 2.4Ghz band is to select all triggered clients since the settings are the same as those in the Steering Trigger Condition section.
(Interface Select and Qualify Procedures) Once a client has been triggered AND selected, this section does the following: If bandwidth utilization on 5Ghz-2 is less than or equal to 0%, then steer ALL clients to 5Ghz-2, else steer to 5Ghz-1.
If I continue with the other two bands then Amazon would want me to get my own blog. Hopefully that is enough for readers to see how band steering rules work in general. I think it is awesome that Asus lets us basically write our own programming through the user interface for band steering but many people will have trouble without a doubt. Mine is working great though.
Update3: I've been running ping plotter on a laptop connected to the first 5Ghz band for almost 24 hours. The software is set up to email me if a ping exceeds 500ms and it is pinging every 2.5 seconds. So far I have had no indication that my wireless is dropping out. My ISP is stable as well. I saw so many reviews that talked about dropped connections I thought that maybe the connection was dropping and reacquiring so quickly that I haven't noticed. I thought there was a slim chance since my download is so good that it could re-establish connection before it needed to buffer video. That is not the case on the band I have looked at so far. I do recommend ping plotter. It's a neat tool and you can tell if you are having problems localy or on an ISP hop.
My firmware version shown in the user interface is: 3.0.0.4.378_7838
Signature version: 1.068
This thing is stable and works like a champ. Either I'm just the luckiest person around, or a lot of other people just have no clue what they are doing. History would suggest I'm not that lucky.

This is a Dual-Core router with Asus-WRT. The rich router configuration panel allow for excellent control. There is an an Android App which allows you to quickly view and change settings. It has a in-built Antivirus as well. You can graphically see which household member's device is consuming most of your bandwidth!
The data-transfer between wireless-and wired devices is very fast as well. Connect a pen drive and it can doiwnload torrents onto it. Media on the pen-drive can be shared across devices. One point to note, in case you wish to use AiCloud functionality, over internet, the router must have its external IP directly exposed to the internet. In other words, the DSL modem has to be in bridge mode. I tried that for a few weeks and it worked beautifully but then I reverted for security and privacy reasons.
This router does have connection teaming with load balancing and failover modes but I faced many issues with that feature especially if one network goes down. So a dedicated load balance router has now been placed behind it to handle those duties.
The Wifi-AC network connectivity as expected has decent coverage and AC speeds are seen only if sitting in same or adjacent room. Any further and it reverts to wifi-N. In an ideal world, I would have purchased a router that gives me Wifi-AC connection all over my house but sadly such a router does not yet exist !
It is a beast but will be an overkill for most households.
Recomendado 100%
The issue from this seller if you're based in the UK is that the router is a US SKU and only comes with an American power supply. There are no UK or Euro adaptors included ( or indeed mentioned by the seller). The power supply itself is multi-voltage and I happened to have the necessary US to UK adaptor lying around so wasn't a major issue for me but others need to be aware if using this seller.
I bought this router to work with my BT Infinity 2 package to replace a BT Homehub 4. Luckily it's just a case of plugging the OpenReach modem into the routers WAN port and looging in the the BT credentials. For me they were bthomehub@btbroadband.com with a password of BT.
Range is much improved over the Homehub on both 2.4ghz and 5ghz bands I've been able to remove a second wireless ap that I was using to fill in some poor reception areas in the house.
Throughput on 2.4ghz is a match for the homehub but slightly down on the 5ghz band tested using my Oneplus One in the same location. It's not clear to me why this would be the case but this router does utilise two 5ghz networks so I suspect it will be much better at sustaining any rate as the number of clients increases versus the homehub.
It is rather large and somewhat imposing to look at, mine is in a study but I can imagine it looking somewhat out of place in a living room for example.
The set up is very simple and the gui is probably the best I've ever used in a router. I've had some issues with disconnects but overcame these by not using the smartconnect option for wireless and removing wpa key recycling option. Others have reported the same elsewhere with the same fix, I'm sure a later firmware update may see this fixed but I'm happy seeing separate networks anyway.
There are a complete myriad of options available from network attached storage to using 4g modem as a failover, it's all the router you'll ever need I'm sure.
